The collection consists of maps, field books, legal documents, business papers, and diares related to the work of surveyors George Hansen, Alfred Solano, and others. The maps and surveys in the collection are of the city of Los Angeles, Southern California ranchos, and subdivisions of the city of Los Angeles and neighboring towns. Of the 3,225 pieces in the collection, there are over 2,100 maps and sketch maps. Other subjects represented in the collection include: civil engineering, land subdivision, mines and mineral resources, and daily life in Los Angeles and Los Angeles County.

In 1875 Alfred Solano became associated with surveyor George Hansen (1824-97), assisting him in the making of surveys of various tracts in Los Angeles County and in other parts of Southern California. Hansen served as Los Angeles city surveyor from 1863 to 1868, and in 1883. After Hansen's death in 1897, his records were left to Solano, who became a parter of Sidney B.
